On Friday, Sept. 2, San Felipe United Methodist Church will host perhaps the most diverse international group of tourists ever to visit Austin County.
Participants are attendees of the World Methodist Conference which is being held in Houston at George R. Brown Convention Center. The World Methodist Conference is held every five years and attracts about 5,000 delegates from about 80 countries and 75 denominations, which trace their origin to John Wesley in the 18th century. Those denominations include the United Methodist Church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, the Free Methodist Church, the Church of Nazarene, and many national churches.
Approximately 75 participants will tour First United Methodist Church in Houston and then proceed to San Felipe United Methodist Church. After a presentation on historic San Felipe and the role of Spanish-speaking Methodists in Texas history, the group will go to Chappell Hill. At Chappell Hill, they will tour both the Chappell Hill Historical Museum and Chappell Hill United Methodist Church. They will be treated to a Texas barbeque.
Tour organizers have already received reservations from delegates from the Bahamas, Zimbabwe, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Nigeria, Singapore, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Sweden, Ireland, Germany, South Korea, Peru, Jamaica, the United Kingdom, Mozambique, Malaysia, and the United States.
Two members of the Austin County Historical Commission will participate. Carolyn Scott of St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church in Sealy will give a presentation on the history of the A.M.E. church in Texas. William C. Hardt, archivist of the Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church, is co-organizer.
Hardt said, “The Austin/Washington County area was vital to the growth of Methodism in the Republic of Texas era. We are delighted to share this part of our heritage with sisters and brothers from all over the world.”
